The renovation of the Csokonai Theater, which began in September 2020, is nearing its end. Experts have completed the exterior and interior painting and tiling works, and most of the auditorium seats are already in place. The arrival hall of the Csokonai Theater has been completely renewed, featuring a spacious columned hall to welcome visitors.

-” An important aspect of the investment is that the theater’s seating capacity has nearly doubled, significantly increasing its capacity while preserving the architectural values of the building. Compared to the previous 350 full seats, there are now over 600 seats in the theater” – said Mayor László Papp.

The project is being carried out under the supervision of heritage conservation authorities. The mechanical and electrical works are complete, and the stage installation will soon be finished. The building will be equipped with one of the most modern stage technologies in the country, similar to that of the Csokonai Forum. Due to the modernization and expansion, the theater company will soon require a multi-stage staff expansion.

The theater’s main profile will be to revive opera performances and restart the opera scene in Debrecen, as well as host any stage production that requires a large orchestra or a bigger space, emphasized Péter Gemza, the director of Csokonai Theater.

The facade renovation and park landscaping were completed earlier, so the investment is currently 90% complete.
