One of the largest projects in our company’s history: the complex renovation of the Csokonai Theater

Over the past 30 years, our company has significantly contributed to shaping the cityscape of Debrecen. The renovation of the Csokonai Theater fit well within our ongoing efforts, making it clear that we would apply for the public procurement tender.

The primary goal was to deliver a building capable of hosting performances that meet modern expectations, based on a theater-specific concept. We equipped the stage with world-class tools, including sound, lighting, and special effects. The stage area was fitted with unique stage machinery that is unparalleled in the country.

During the renovation, the foyer underwent a major transformation. The new staircase was created on both sides of the space, and a new ceiling structure was built, resulting in a spacious, bright foyer with a gallery.

An important aspect of the project was to ensure the best possible view from the seats to the stage, especially from the balconies. The client, operator, and designer conducted multiple rounds of sightline assessments.

The building can be divided into two parts since the iron curtain separates the auditorium from the stage and backstage area. The auditorium is the space open to guests and viewers. Here, the 150-year-old traditions and materials are reflected everywhere, combined with the possibilities of the modern era. However, behind the scenes, top-tier theater technology awaits the theater workers, dressed in a modern guise, providing them with the space to prepare and carry out their professional work properly, resulting in performances that offer the greatest experience for the audience,” said CEO Miklós Bakos.

Chief Project Engineer Tamás Vigh commented on the project:

“I had the opportunity to contribute to the shaping of one of Debrecen’s symbols. The theater renovation attracted great interest, allowing me to show our progress to people I might not have otherwise met. There was a lot of work involved, but it turned into a beautiful building. The ceremonial opening is the day when we can finally close the project, seeing that everything works as it should. The real gift, as my colleague Szabolcs Szombathy and I often tell our young daughters, Emma and Flóra, is that we are building this for you.”
