In addition to treating two thousand new cancer outpatients and inpatients annually, the institute’s specialists are responsible for the radiotherapy care of one million people living in the region. The development was funded by the institution itself, amounting to over two billion forints, and the project was executed by HUNÉP Zrt.
The Oncoradiology Clinic, previously part of the Oncology Clinic, has been operating as an independent unit since 2019. Here, two thousand new cancer outpatients and inpatients are treated annually, and the staff are responsible for the radiotherapy care of one million people in the region. The 3,400 square meter building was completed earlier, and now the full setup, including waiting rooms, patient rooms, and examination rooms, has been finalized.
According to László Pósán, a member of parliament, this development, which serves patients from four counties, is beneficial for the region. “Every such development is a great joy and one more building block in the grand process we call Debrecen’s growth. In this respect, the University of Debrecen plays a pioneering role,” the representative said.
Chancellor Zoltán Bács hopes that the institution can further enhance the already high level of care:
“We have big plans for radiotherapy, and I hope that the content can continuously improve and that we can increasingly fulfill the regional center role alongside the national institute,” emphasized Zoltán Bács.
At the inauguration, Miklós Kásler, Minister of Human Resources, emphasized the success of the domestic oncology care system.
“We have a nationally accredited institute at the highest international level, and there are also centers in the four regions, one of which is the University of Debrecen. Additionally, each county has its own oncology center. Once the development in Salgótarján is completed, this system will be complete,” the minister highlighted.”
The Debrecen institute also employs psychologists and physiotherapists. Plans are in place to soon replace and acquire new machines to treat cancer patients with the most advanced technology. The investment was funded by the institution itself, and the work was carried out by HUNÉP Zrt.
